Unique gift ideas – the beginning

Tolkien himself

J.R.R.Tolkien is best known for his Lord of the Rings series. What many fewer people know is that he was an Old English scholar and had a tremendous influence on the prominence of the Beowulf tale. Before Tolkein, Beowulf was obscure, mostly unknown and considered of little relevance. Today, if school children can remember anything at all about Old English literature, it is likely Beowulf.

This world where monsters and supernatural heros were normal became the world of Tolkien’s fiction. The strange world of 6th century Scandanavia where people huddled together in great halls for heat and for protection against the darkness, the fog and the dangers that lurked beyond the walls. In those days, danger was everywhere; lives were short and gifts were often stolen booty.

It was also a world where magic happened. Talismen of great power might be found in a hole in a rock. A gift might bring terrible hardship and bad luck – or if might reverse the fortunes and bring happiness and wealth to all who touched it.

I don’t have any gift ideas to share today, but: Stay tuned – much more excitement to come! Just like those roving reporters that take a road trip across the USA or Canada, stopping here and there to share delightful tales of the amazing and the ordinary, I’ll be on the lookout for the amazing and the ordinary made extraordinary – ways to show you off as someone with impeccable taste and style.

A most unique gift - the Ring than Golem found
This is the Ring itself. Unique – but too dangerous to own. Leads directly to the Dark Side
